It’s no easy task to adhere to much less get started on an exercise regimeif you’re a a full-time mom or dad but it’s not impossible. Fortunately, if you start to look at the day with a creative mind you’ll find that a stay-at-home parents’ schedule has many opportunities to sneak a work out in. You just need to be taught where to find them. Here are just a few opportunities for exercise time for exercise that you may not have seen before.
Make your children part of your workout routine With the alarming rate of childhood obesity, it’s every parent’s duty to make sure their family is sticking to a regular exercise regime. Here’s one idea: The next time you tell your children to go outside to play go outside and play too. Don’t let what you need to do be an excuse to not get your heart rate up and take the time to play with your children.
Another idea, especially if you have young children is putting your workout clothes on just as soon as you get out of bed and vowing not to take them off until your workout is complete. By doing this, you’re ready to squeeze in that workout time at the instant you find an opportunity - say, while the children are watching ‘Blue’s Clues’ or napping. By doing this, you’re also sending yourself a constant reminder that your exercise regime is a priority.
Of course, no matter how hard you try, some days don’t seem to present any opportunities to complete your entire exercise regime. Even on days where a full workout isn’t an option, there are simple ways to supplement your exercise regime without a full-on 30 minute cardio session. For example, you can park in the back of the grocery store lot and sneak in a few extra steps there.
Even better, pick up the pace when you walk wherever you’re walking. At-home parents can workout using small children by using the tykes as dead weight for intense pushups and leg lifts. The children will have a ball. Why not climb a few flights of stairs at those down moments when you’re waiting for your printer to finish that 50-page printing or the dryer to stop. At the end of the day making your workouts a priority will not only help to keep you healthy it also helps you set an example for your children in the long term.
