A Cool Article On How Bad BMI Is To Measure Health

February 28th, 2009 by Home fitness specialist

A great article on how lame BMI is to measure health

I’ve found this in Arabic forums

For more please check image board

Tom Cruise: Fatty or Hottie? If Tom Cruise had been accidentally decapitated in the making of the last movie, he would have become one more victim of our “obesity epidemic.” Sound weird? Welcome to the politics of fats, where bathroom scales can be tax-deductible, lawyers are lining up to sue anything rumored to contain calories, and the press has fed us a steady diet of hysteria and hyperbole.

The first thing you need to understand is that in our twilight zone of fats hysteria, he is officially obese. That’s based on the Body Mass Index (BMI), a measurement that separates us into government-approved, overweight, and obese categories by taking into consideration only our height and weight. A BMI of 30 or more makes you obese, and at 5-7, 201 pounds, Tom Cruise has a BMI of 31.

According to the BMI standard, 61% of Americans are fat or obese. You have probably heard that number. Along with the claim that obesity costs the United States $117 billion a year and kills 300,000 Americans annually, it is one of the three most commonly cited figures associated with our so-called obesity epidemic.

But it’s more like an epidemic of bad statistics. All three of these numbers are seriously flawed.

fat Cruise is in good company. Thanks to the absurdities of the BMI yardstick, Sylvester Stallone (5-9, 228 pounds, BMI of 34) and Mel Gibson (5-9, 214 pounds, BMI of 32) are also “obese.” So was Mark McGwire (6-5, 250 pounds, BMI of 30) the year he hit 70 home runs. And if politics is your thing, you’ll be interested to know that the new governor of California (6-2, 257 pounds, BMI of 33) is obese, too.

Here’s how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains these counterintuitive results: “Overweight may or may not be due to increases in body fat. It may also be due to an increase in lean muscle.”

It’s not just full-blown obesity that has been bungled by numerical hocus-pocus. 39 million Americans went to sleep one night in 1998 at a government-approved weight, and woke up “overweight” the next morning, thanks to a change in the government’s definition. That group includes presently “overweight” (BMI greater than or equal to 25) movie stars like Will Smith (6-2, 210 pounds, BMI of 27) and Pierce Brosnan (6-2, 211 pounds, BMI of 27). Michael Jordan (6-6, 216 pounds, BMI of 25) and Cal Ripken Jr. (6-4, 220 pounds, BMI of 27) were also “overweight” at the height of their athletic powers. And so is our ultra-fit President Bush (6-0, 194 pounds, BMI of 26). Moreover, the standard that we abandoned in 1998 had the virtue of distinguishing between men and women–something we now do not even attempt to do.

So what does Tom Cruise’s imaginary swordplay mishap have to do with obesity? Chalk it up to more bad statistics. The regularly recycled factoid that excess weight causes 300,000 deaths a year bizarrely assumes that if you die while overweight, you die because of that excess weight. As insane as it sounds, if Cruise were to kick the bucket for any reason, his death would count toward the mythical 300,000 total.

The respected New England Journal of Medicine knows this is bogus. It maintains that the 300,000 figure “is by no means well established. Not only is it derived from weak or incomplete data, but it is also called into question by the methodologic difficulties of determining which of the many factors contribute to premature death.”

Nevertheless, this statistic finds its way into nearly every discussion of obesity–as does the spurious claim that obesity costs Americans $117 billion per year. The source of this figure: a single study published by the journal Obesity Research in 1998.

This study had serious limitations, as the authors themselves admitted. They acknowledged that their methodology resulted in the “double-counting of costs” which “would inflate the cost estimate.” There’s also this stunning admission: “We are still uncertain about the actual amount of health utilization associated with overweight and obesity. Height and weight are not included in many of the primary data sources.”

But even if they had good data to work with and somehow controlled for the double (and even triple) counting of costs, these researchers still would have reached a unrealistic conclusion. Why? They used the wrong definition of obesity.

A BMI of 30 or more makes you obese, but the authors of this study for some reason decided to set the threshold at “BMI greater than or equal to 29.” Thus they erroneously included the economic cost of individuals with a BMI between 29 and 30. A small error? Not at all. That covers more than ten million Americans, including Bruce Willis (6-0, 211 pounds, BMI of 29), Brendan Fraser (6-3, 234 lbs, BMI of 29), and George Clooney (5-11, 211 pounds, BMI of 29).

$117 billion cost. 300,000 deaths. 61 percent fat or obese. All wrong. Unfortunately, these bad statistics are the shaky ground on which a growing number of activist groups seek to build their nutritional utopias.

Focusing On Your Upper Body With Aerobic Exercise For Weight Loss

February 26th, 2009 by Home fitness specialist

Working your Upper Body with Aerobics

Everyone knows that aerobics can be the most important thing in your life when it comes to fitness and needed weight loss. Working out is something that a lot of people do, and for good reason. Doing aerobics or other types of workouts is a great way to make sure you are as healthy as you can be. However, aerobics not only helps you to be healthy, but it gives you a chance to be more upbeat, and in better moods as well. Aerobics are all around good activities for you, whether you’re seeking weight loss or not.

Sometimes, though, no matter how good an activity might be for our whole body, we want to focus on something smaller, like part of our body that we don’t like. It is always good to work out in a way that targets your whole body, but sometimes you might want to work on something that is really bothering you, or a point where you know you are very weak. This is where targeted aerobics comes in.

Our upper bodies are things that we know we want to work on. Our arm muscles and the other areas located above our waists are often the things that we don’t like about ourselves, and this are often what we want to change. We all need strong arms and a strong upper body, because we have to do a lot of motion during the day. That is why strengthening your upper body is so important. Some info is available at needed weight loss

When you are trying to target your upper body, repetitions are going to be key. You want to move your body in a way that makes your muscles work. As you are running or walking, you want to have repetitions in your movements with your arms and your shoulders. These should be moved and lifted over your head, and then put back down again, but you have to be sure that you are constantly repeating this movement. This is a good place to have your jumping jacks, because each time you move your arms up and down you are going to be working those muscles.

When attaching weights, make sure the fit is snug, non-abrasive (won’t rub your skin raw) and comfortable as you move through your routines. Don’t let them flop or slap as you exercise. Also, when you start using weights, EASE into the routines so you don’t strain otherwise healthy muscles. Remember to be balanced, right and left, so you don’t fall during your routines.

Another great thing to remember is that each time you move your muscles you are making them stronger. A simple weight loss tip is if you want to get rid of fat on your arms, you have to move the part of your arm that you aren’t happy with. Attaching small weights to your wrists is a great way to strengthen your arms during aerobic exercise.

Hoodia Gordonii Extract – Natural Weight Loss

February 26th, 2009 by Home fitness specialist

So you’ve tried every diet in the book, you exercise regularly, and you avoid the foods that you know are bad for you–but you still can’t lose weight. For many women and men, these methods don’t work because they have failed to eliminate one very important factor: hunger. To aid you in your diet process, all-natural Hoodia Gordonii extract can curb your hunger where it begins.

Still others believe that liquid extract can rush the key component (P57) of Hoodia Gordonii to your system with maximum results. While the science behind this is not conclusive, there are promising studies and consumer reports that suggest that this could be true. The key is finding a pure Hoodia Gordonii extract instead of a watered-down version of the supplement.

There are two important factors to consider when purchasing Hoodia Gordonii extract . First, always look for 100 percent concentrations. Extract formulas say that they give you concentrated forms of Hoodia Gordonii, but are typically just stripped down versions of this rare plant. Companies are always looking to save money, so selling an extract is often cheaper than selling the real thing. Many scientists feel that all parts of this plant are required for use in order to attain real weight loss results.

Buying Hoodia Gordonii extract involves research and patience on the part of the smart consumer. There are thousands of products on the market that claim to be effective appetite suppressants. However, some have dangerous side effects, others have high levels of caffeine, and still others have no real effect whatsoever. This is why the introduction of Hoodia Gordonii onto the American market in 2004 was so exciting.

The result is significant weight loss, up to several pounds a week. When you take in fewer calories, you will lose weight, no matter what your genetic predisposition. Also, when you combine this diet aid with exercise and wise eating habits, your results will be maximized. There is no quick cure for weight loss, but Hoodia Gordonii is one of the safest and most natural ways to aid you in your diet plan.

On the other hand, when Hoodia extract is use it is more or less absorbed immediately by the body, and the majority of people should start to experience the effects after a relatively short time. Hoodia diet supplements has a far superior absorption rate compared with the tablet or pill, while simultaneously giving you similar or more often than not, better results than the tablet variety even when taken at much lower dosages.

5 Ways To Beat The Belly Bloat & Burn Stomach Fat

February 25th, 2009 by Home fitness specialist

It doesn’t matter how skinny you are, you can still have an embarrassing belly bloat and disgusting stomach fat. That’s often the case in men and women who control their weight with only cardio exercise, but eat too many carbohydrates and fail to do new-school fat loss workouts.

The embarrassing belly bloat is most embarrassing in the summer. All winter other men and women are envious of your physique, because you look great while wearing jeans and a sweater. However, when swimsuit season comes around, you dread “baring it all” because of the belly bloat and stomach fat that hang around your middle.

Fortunately, you can beat the belly bloat and burn stomach fat at any age. In fact, here’s one woman’s story of how she went from fit to fabulous with just three short, but intense workouts per week and by making the right diet changes that helped her lose the last bit of belly fat.

Tabitha did this all by entering a 12-week Transformation Contest (that’s where men and women compete for cash prizes by losing fat). There were 5 factors that helped her win third prize in the contest, including nutrition, interval training, short burst resistance training, total body ab exercises, and social support.

Let’s discover Tabitha’s amazing journey. As a busy 39 year old stay at home mom, she had stubborn belly fat that refused to budge, no matter how much cardio she did. Tabitha even tried aerobics classes and the Buns of Steel and Abs of Steel videos. Nothing got rid of her belly bloat or was able to burn stomach fat.

One of the simplest, but most effective factors in her fat loss was switching to an easy to follow diet that focused on whole, natural foods while eliminating foods that came in a bag or a box. This was healthy and satisfying, and she felt like she had more mental energy all day long.

She resisted starting resistance training, but her husband insisted. Eventually, she tried the program that came with the Transformation Contest and she was hooked! The key to her workouts were short, burst resistance training workouts that changed every 4 weeks. She also added interval training to her program that worked like magic for beating the belly bloat and to burn stomach fat fast.

She dropped 4 dress sizes, going from a fit size 8 to a fabulous size 4 while losing 4.25 inches from her waist and 8.6 pounds in total.

Tabitha also discovered that she didn’t need to do crunches. Instead, she focused on total body ab exercises done only a couple of times per week, and achieved more results in just 12 weeks than she did after years of doing sit-ups!

The social support aspect of the contest was a shocking, but pleasant surprise. She used a fat loss forum to get help and advice, and also grew even closer to her husband Tom thanks to the contest. They held each other accountable and supported one another during tough times.

Without the social support from her husband and the folks on the fat loss forum, it would have been very hard for her to beat the belly bloat and burn stomach fat, so if you are struggling then make sure you are not missing out on one of the secret keys to fat loss.

Start working with a personal trainer or start hanging around people at your gym who are getting results. Don’t let old friends drag you down by pressuring you into bad meals and being lazy. Be proud and get support for your goals. You’ll be able to beat the belly bloat and burn stomach fat if you stick with the new-school fat loss workouts and your whole, natural food diet. Try to find a transformation contest that helps you put this all together.

3 Fat Burning Interval Training Workouts To Lose Stomach Fat

February 22nd, 2009 by Home fitness specialist

Old school fat loss is out, and new school fat burning workouts are in. Shocking research from Australia shows that short, interval training workouts are more effective for fat burning than long, slow aerobic cardio workouts.

In the study conducted at the University of New South Wales, women who used interval training lost more belly fat than women doing cardio – even though the cardio workouts were twice as long!

At first, my clients have a hard time believing that they can cut their workout time. Most people, like my client Nick, were used to doing long, slow cardio workouts. Every book, every magazine, and every other trainer they ever talked to always said they needed to do long cardio workouts to burn fat – sometimes trainers even said they had to do the workouts first thing in the morning on an empty stomach!

But research shows that isn’t true, and when Nick switched over to interval training, he lost 4 pounds in the first 2 weeks. Plus, everyone loves shorter workouts. As a busy lawyer and parent of two young boys, Nick doesn’t have time to be wasting at the gym. So intervals have been a godsend for him.

Here are three of the interval training workouts that Nick does to burn fat. (Make sure you do a thorough warm-up before and a cool-down after each workout.)

The first interval program is copied straight from the Australian research study that found the best way to burn belly fat was to use intervals, not long, slow cardio. Subjects in this study trained three times per week, and alternated between 8 seconds of hard exercise and 12 seconds of easy exercise for 20 full minutes.

This workout is tough to do on cardio equipment at your gym because it is hard to speed up and slow down so fast. But you can do this with a jump rope, or by running in place, or you can do it outside running or biking.

However, if you only do interval training inside on cardio equipment, it will be easier for you to stick to classic “sports-training” intervals. I first started using these with athletes for fat burning over 10 years ago, and they work great inside and outside.

After a warm-up, do six intervals of 60 seconds of hard exercise followed by 60-120 seconds of easy exercise. If you are a beginner, take it easy and don’t work too hard in the work interval phase, and also take 120 seconds to recover. As you get fit, you can work harder in those 60 seconds and decrease your rest periods.

If you do a 5 minute warm-up, followed by 6 intervals of 60 seconds work and 60 seconds rest, you can finish with 3-minutes of cool-down for a 20 minute workout. If you are a beginner, do fewer intervals (3-4) when taking longer rests, and you’ll also be done in 20 minutes. You can do these workouts on any cardio machine in the gym.

Finally, you can also do timed bodyweight intervals in the comfort of your own home, and these are my new favorite interval workouts. In fact, I’m off to do one right now after I finish this article!

You can use a simple stopwatch or gym timer to help you out. Set up the intervals for 15 seconds of exercise and 15 seconds of recovery. Do bodyweight squats for 15 seconds, then walk around the room for 15 seconds. Repeat this 8 times. You can follow that up with the same protocol for lunges (doing 6 rounds), pushups (doing 3-4 rounds), and even planks (doing 6-8 rounds).

The time flies on this workout, and you get a total body workout that isn’t boring like cardio. You’ll be shocked by how effective these three interval training workouts are for fat loss. Do interval training only three times per week in combination with 2-3 strength training workouts, and you’ll sculpt a lean, beach body in 6 weeks or less.

Bootcamp Workout Program – Secrets To Getting Into Shape With Bootcamp Fitness

February 19th, 2009 by admin

It’s actually easier staying fit than getting fit. So why do many people lack the motivation to stay in shape knowing that once you’re there, a consistent maintenance program is all that’s really needed.

One of the best ways to stay in shape if you consider you lack some motivation is to do a bootcamp workout program. Now we know this conjures up images of drill sargeants yelling obscenities at their troops however, it’s really not like this and you shouldn’t be put off by the word bootcamp.

Bootcamps while they can be tough if you are not in shape are designed to provide as much encouragement as they are challenging. You’re set goals and you achieve them. Commitment to stay the course is a must.

5 Bootcamp Work Program Ideas

1. With a fitness bootcamp program, the first thing that you will want to do is to set a goal for yourself. Are you trying to become more athletic, or do you want to burn fat? Your goal plays a huge factor in determining your diet and the types of workouts you’ll have.

2. Toning muscles in a fitness program would call for lighter but longer workouts, while building muscles would call for the opposite with heavier but less reps.

3. A bootcamp workout program will also ask you to determine your current level of athleticism. By the end, you’ll be doing the same workouts anyway, but people of different fitness levels will start out with different workouts and take different amounts of time to reach their goals. There is absolutely no point to trying to run five miles if walking for five minutes leaves you breathless.

4. Remember, a fitness program is all about baby steps, and you should not become discouraged if your progress is slow. If you can look back over several months and see any progress at all, then use your achievement as motivation in the months ahead. Motivation is key to any fitness program’s success.

5. By developing a bootcamp workout program for yourself, you can vastly increase your chances of success. You will be more organized, and your goal will be much clearer from the start.

Instead of a vague “I want to lose weight” goal, set some standards for yourself and your expected progress. The first few weeks are often crucial to any weight loss or body training program, as the progress you see in the first few weeks often makes or breaks your motivation for weeks to come.

If you’re not happy with your body and want to improve it, you don’t need fancy equipment or expensive diet pills – all you need is some motivation, a little hard work, and bootcamp workout programs to get you started!
